Publishing Your Research

If you were a presenter of the 2024 UA Undergrad History Research Symposium, you are eligible to have your research published as an article in a special issue of the UA history journal, Footnotes. Congratulations!

About Footnotes:

Footnotes: A Journal of History presents original, peer-reviewed primary research and historiographical papers from the University of Arizona’s undergraduate and graduate students. We are a forum of publication for historical research in a cross-variety of fields of inquiry. University of Arizona history students are able to work with the journal as both editors and authors. Footnotes highlights the importance of history and its applications in our ever-changing world.

Submission Requirements:

  1. Submission files are accepted in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  2. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references and quotations. Authors should make sure they are correct, in substance and style.
  3. The text is double-spaced; uses Times New Roman 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  4. Citations and formatting follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, Notes-Bibliography System (footnotes). Where available, please provide URLs and DOIs for the references.
  5. Submissions for the UA Undergrad History Research Symposium special issue should be 15-25 double-spaced pages, or 4000-6250 words inclusive of footnotes. (Note that most journals do not publish articles with bibliographies, so please do not include this as a separate section with your submission.)
  6. For the form and separate from the submission file, you will need to have a short abstract summarizing your paper (about 150-250 words) and a few keywords relevant to your paper. You may (and are encouraged to!) use the abstract that you submitted for the conference, updating/revising it as needed.

Update: Deadline for draft submission is August 20th, 2024.

The 2024 submission form has now closed. Thank you for your interest!

Please be sure to follow all of the submission guidelines and to submit your article draft here through the symposium website for consideration. If your research is selected for peer review and publishing, you will hear from us following the August 20th deadline (early in the Fall 2024 semester) regarding next steps!

If you have any questions about the submission process, please reach out to Dr. David Pietz for assistance.
